A hotel since 1894, William Hancock, a brewer from Wiveliscombe, built the present building in 1886 on the site of the old Three Horseshoes Inn and the buildings around the courtyard at the rear are the original stables and coachmen’s cottages. An old photo of the original site can be found in reception today.

The area has many links with several romantic poets and it’s argued that RD Blackmore partly wrote Lorna Doone staring from the window of the original building. The novel is based around historical characters in the late 17th century and incorporates real events and places into a story of forbidden love amongst feuding families. You’ll find an old edition in the snug to flick through.

Porlock Hill has many picnic areas with incredible, stunning views of the coast, across to Wales and of the moor itself. You can order a bespoke picnic from us (min. 24 hours notice).

Or visit Porlock Weir, a tiny ancient harbour perfect for a paddle or leisurely stroll around the unique shops.
